“Teaching to make movies: The role of film schools in the training of new filmmakers”
Manuel Silva (Portugal) is a film director, a teacher and president of the board of directors at the Higher School of Arts in Porto. He teaches Directing, Narrative Structures, Documentary
and Screenplay. His Ph.D. thesis was about the narrative structure of Portuguese cinema. He gives lectures as an invited professor at film and media oriented universities
in different countries. He is the founder, the director and the commissioner of the International Film Schools Festival (MIFEC).
During the workshop, Manuel Silva will consider issues such as what is and how a film school works and what they teach; is cinema an art or entertainment; how to teach film language and film technologies: an artistic approach; story and discourse; how important are narrative and story; poetic and aesthetic in cinema and the understanding of theory and history of movies; watching movies to learn cinema.
